Intergenerational Learning Key to Nepal’s Social Cohesion

Kathmandu— Political stability in Nepal hinges on fostering intergenerational learning among leaders, citizens, and ordinary people, according to recent analysis. This systemic effort aims to share values, knowledge, and experience across age groups, building mutual trust and a unified national vision while acknowledging each generation’s contributions. Deep social, economic, and political connections are considered pillars of cohesion, with conflict between generations seen as weakening the nation's progress.

Bridging Generational Divides

The analysis emphasizes that political parties and media play a crucial role in maximizing the potential of both youth and experienced leaders, rather than fostering competition. Senior generations can share insights into history, culture, and tradition, while younger generations contribute skills in modern technology and management practices. This exchange is intended to create an environment of equality, power-sharing, and accountability, enabling Nepal to overcome national challenges.

Public Morality and Accountability

Public morality and legal frameworks are seen as essential for mediating differing viewpoints between generations and promoting inclusivity. Humility and empathy can foster a common cause, reducing tension in social, economic, and political spheres while holding each generation accountable for its actions. This approach is believed to cultivate a healthy community built on mutual respect, understanding, and adaptability.

Cultivating Civic Culture

Democratic socialization and active participation in societal processes are highlighted as ways to address structural injustices and implement rational reforms. Juergen Habermas’s argument that a democratic constitutional state can institutionalize reciprocity is cited, providing opportunities for younger generations while diminishing paternalistic tendencies. The analysis suggests adapting civic education within political parties to foster inclusivity, inner-party democracy, and the circulation of diverse age groups in leadership positions.

Harnessing Youth Potential

With nearly 46% of Nepal’s population between 16 and 40 years old, the analysis stresses the importance of utilizing this “youth bulge” for economic growth and innovation. Providing proper education and skill training is seen as crucial to harnessing their potential, while addressing issues like poverty, unemployment, and lack of opportunity is vital to prevent unrest. Current government efforts focused on agriculture, infrastructure, and employment are viewed as positive steps in mobilizing youth for sustainable progress.

Intergenerational Justice and Beyond

The analysis calls for intergenerational justice, emphasizing the responsibility of current generations to preserve resources equitably for future ones. It argues that public goods like culture and social norms should not be solely evaluated by market calculations but prioritized for their contribution to social cohesion. Furthermore, it suggests regulating digital platforms to mitigate the spread of misinformation and foster responsible online engagement.

The analysis concludes that intergenerational learning can establish equal opportunity, resolve conflicting worldviews, and drive positive political and economic outcomes, ultimately contributing to Nepal’s social transformation and national rebuilding.
