Journalism Navigates the Shift From Depth to Brevity

Kathmandu— For three decades, journalism has undergone a significant transformation driven by evolving generational needs and technological advancements. What was once defined by traditional print and broadcast methods now encompasses digital platforms, leading to distinctions in both form and content. This shift, while increasing accessibility, raises critical questions about the practice of journalism itself – particularly as declining attention spans demand increasingly concise news delivery.

The Evolution of News Delivery

The move towards online news dissemination began in the late 1990s with pioneers like the BBC and CNN launching websites to complement their traditional broadcasts. Since then, the digital landscape has rapidly evolved, forcing journalists to adapt alongside these changes. The emergence of social media platforms in the 2010s, coupled with the popularity of short-form video content popularized by TikTok, have proven particularly disruptive to established journalistic norms.

Democratization and the Demand for Convenience

Journalism has become increasingly democratized, as any citizen with a device can now report on events. This access also fuels a demand for convenience – news delivered in the shortest possible time. However, this desire clashes with journalism’s core principles of providing fact-based, detailed, and nuanced information. A comprehensive understanding of complex events cannot be achieved within seconds, yet media companies are actively pushing towards such short-form content.

The Dilution of Information

While short-form content can provide some level of information, its effectiveness in conveying the full essence of a story remains debatable. The question arises as to how much detail can be sacrificed to make content appealing to younger audiences and what is lost in the process. A concerted effort from across the journalistic field is needed to educate the public about the value of engaging with long-form news sources, especially investigative journalism which requires extensive research.

Misinformation and the Role of Media Houses

The issue of misinformation is amplified by short-form content, particularly with the rise of AI-generated media. Content that evokes strong emotions tends to spread rapidly, and unverified information proliferates easily through citizen journalism, which lacks the ethical constraints of traditional reporting. Established media houses have a crucial role to play in combating this trend by dedicating resources to fact-checking and ensuring access to accurate information. They should also limit paywalls on their websites to facilitate wider access to long-form content.

Shifting Expectations and Attention Economy

Media companies and platforms face the challenge of balancing accessibility with accuracy, but they ultimately stand to lose the most if misinformation prevails. However, the responsibility doesn't solely rest with media organizations; individuals must also adjust their expectations. The demand for instant, constant news has created a marketplace where attention is valued over accuracy. Reversing this requires both institutional and cultural shifts – audiences must recognize that in-depth knowledge demands time and patience, which have become valuable commodities in today’s attention economy.

Ultimately, navigating the tension between convenience and comprehensive reporting will require a collaborative effort from media organizations, platforms, and individuals to prioritize accuracy and depth alongside accessibility.
