Pakistan’s PTI Files Contempt Petition Over Imran Khan’s Hospital Transfer

Kathmandu— Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the political party led by imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has filed a contempt petition against several government officials after authorities took Khan to a state-run hospital for a medical checkup rather than the privately owned Shifa International Hospital ordered by the Supreme Court. The move prompted accusations of violating court orders and denying Khan access to his preferred physician, escalating tensions surrounding his health and detention since August 2023. PTI is seeking action against Prime Minister, Law Minister, and Information Minister, among others, while also demanding Khan’s transfer to the designated private hospital for continued medical supervision.

Court Order and Government Response

A three-judge bench had previously directed the government on Tuesday to move Khan from Adiala jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within two days for a medical examination, responding to concerns about his deteriorating health. However, officials instead transported him to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a brief checkup on Friday before returning him to jail. The government maintains that the medical evaluation found no immediate need for further care. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated on Friday that security risks at Shifa hospital prompted the decision to use PIMS instead.

PTI’s Allegations and Legal Action

Naeem Panjutha, a legal advisor for PTI, announced the filing of the contempt petition on Saturday, naming the Prime Minister, Law Minister, Information Minister, and other officials as respondents. The petition also requests that Khan be allowed to receive treatment at Shifa International Hospital as originally ordered by the court. PTI leaders further allege that Khan was denied access to his personal physician during the visit to PIMS, adding another layer to their claims of a breach of court directives. Uzma Khan, Imran Khan’s sister who attended the examination at PIMS, told reporters her brother has been “repeatedly tortured in prison” despite appearing physically fit.

Escalating Political Tensions

Imran Khan remains highly popular within Pakistan but has been imprisoned since August 2023 on charges he claims are politically motivated, stemming from a dispute with the country’s military that led to his removal from office. His arrest sparked widespread protests across the nation, including incidents of demonstrators storming military installations. PTI leaders believe this latest incident will intensify pressure and bolster preparations for a planned protest scheduled for September 27.

The contempt petition is now under consideration by the court, with potential implications for government officials and Khan’s access to medical care. The situation remains tense as supporters await further developments.
