Kathmandu— Nepal’s Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, inspected the Sunsarikhola embankment project at Bhokraha Narsingh Rural Municipality-4 in the Sunsari district on Saturday. During his visit, he instructed relevant authorities to adopt an integrated approach to flood control, river management, and irrigation supply. The Minister also engaged with local community members and representatives to discuss ongoing projects and future needs.
Project Inspection and Directives
Minister Shrestha examined the under-construction embankment project and directed concerned bodies to prioritize integrated efforts in flood control, river management, and irrigation. He specifically instructed the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation to identify and implement projects aimed at providing irrigation supplies while simultaneously reducing risks associated with flood-induced disasters.
River Management and Disaster Reduction
The Minister emphasized the importance of sustainable river management planning as a key component in mitigating disaster risks. Shrestha stated that such planning should be advanced concurrently with infrastructure development to ensure long-term effectiveness. He also engaged in discussions with local community members and people’s representatives following the inspection.
Eastern Region Energy Infrastructure Review
Beyond flood control, Minister Shrestha inquired about the status of power supply, transmission lines, and other energy infrastructure within Nepal's eastern region. He pledged to implement new strategies to address challenges in the energy sector and pursue necessary policy reforms.
The Ministry has not specified a timeline for implementing these directives, but indicated ongoing efforts to improve water resource management and energy infrastructure across the country.
