Supreme Court Allows Trump’s White House Ballroom Project To Continue Despite Lawsuit

Kathmandu— The Supreme Court has temporarily allowed President Donald Trump to continue construction on a 90,000-square-foot ballroom addition to the White House despite an ongoing lawsuit challenging its legality and funding. Chief Justice John Roberts issued an administrative stay Friday, pausing lower court rulings that had ordered work to stop until congressional approval was secured. The project, which includes a five-story underground military complex, has been criticized by Democrats as a costly vanity project while the Trump administration argues it is vital for national security.

Legal Challenges and Appeals

Last month, an appeals court upheld a federal district court’s decision that the ballroom project requires congressional approval before proceeding. This prompted Trump to file an emergency appeal with the Supreme Court seeking to overturn those rulings and allow construction to continue. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, which brought the lawsuit, stated that Roberts' decision was “not final” and they are awaiting further action, continuing to question the administration’s justification for the project.

Security Justifications and Project Scope

The Trump administration has argued the construction is necessary for national security and presidential safety. Court filings detail a five-story underground military complex intended to shelter senior officials during emergencies, including a hospital. The ballroom itself is planned with missile-resistant columns and a drone-proof roof, further fortifying the White House. Estimates place the overall project cost at $600 million, though Trump claimed on Saturday it was “under budget” and would cost taxpayers “zero dollars.” Construction began in October 2025, requiring demolition of a section of the East Wing to accommodate the space, which is designed to seat 650 people – more than three times the capacity of the existing East Room.

Political Reactions

The Supreme Court’s decision drew immediate criticism from Democrats. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer accused the “MAGA Supreme Court” of “rubber stamping Trump’s vanity-driven, gilded corruption,” and claimed the administration was “wasting money” on personal projects. Conversely, Trump praised Roberts' decision on his Truth Social platform, expressing gratitude and stating the project is “vital for National Security.” He also vowed to create “the greatest of its kind” ballroom.

Construction Progress

According to officials who addressed the Supreme Court this month, construction is approximately 65% complete. Approximately 250 workers have been on site around the clock, working 20 hours a day, seven days a week, to advance the project. The administrative stay issued by Roberts will likely remain in place for several days as the court further considers the emergency appeal.

The Supreme Court’s decision allows work to continue temporarily while it assesses the legal arguments surrounding the White House ballroom project; a final ruling on the legality and funding of the construction remains pending.
