Kathmandu— Reuters and the Associated Press jointly issued a statement Tuesday demanding answers from Israel regarding last year’s strike on Nasser Hospital in Gaza, which resulted in over 20 fatalities including five journalists. The news agencies highlighted that the attack occurred at a hospital – a protected site under international law and a crucial location for reporting from Gaza – and expressed concern over the lack of accountability one year later. Israel acknowledged carrying out the strike but has not fully addressed concerns regarding civilian casualties or specifically, the deaths of the media workers.

Journalists Among Those Killed

The journalists killed in the August 25, 2025 attack included Reuters cameraman Hussam al-Masri, visual journalist Mariam Dagga who worked for AP and other outlets, and Moaz Abu Taha, a freelancer collaborating with Reuters. Also slain were Al Jazeera photographer Mohammad Salama and Ahmed Abu Aziz, who contributed to the Quds Feed Network and various other media organizations. The strike followed an earlier incident two weeks prior where four Al Jazeera journalists were killed in a separate Israeli strike near al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

Pattern of Attacks on Media

The news agencies also renewed their request for clarification surrounding the October 2023 death of visuals journalist Issam Abdallah, who was fatally struck by Israeli tank fire while reporting in southern Lebanon. In March, RT correspondent Steve Sweeney and cameraman Ali Rida Sbeity sustained shrapnel wounds when a missile landed nearby their location in southern Lebanon; Sweeney stated he believed the attack was deliberate, noting they were visibly marked as press.

CPJ Report Highlights Concerns

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported in February that Israel was responsible for approximately two-thirds of the 129 journalists and media workers killed globally in 2025, labeling Gaza as the most dangerous location for journalists since CPJ began tracking such data in 1992. The organization also noted a lack of transparent investigations by Israel and a failure to hold anyone accountable in the cases it reviewed.

AP and Reuters reiterated their call on the Israeli government to provide explanations for these deaths and take measures to protect journalists reporting from conflict zones, but no immediate response has been reported.
