Kathmandu— Following severe flooding on Wednesday morning originating from the Bhotekoshi River, authorities in Chitwan district, Nepal have recovered sixty-four dead bodies along the banks of the Trishuli and Narayani rivers. The victims were swept downstream by the rapidly moving floodwaters, with both complete bodies and fragmented remains being discovered. Authorities are continuing search operations for those still missing.

Recovery Efforts Underway

As of Sunday, sixty-four bodies have been recovered from the riverbanks within Chitwan district, according to officials. The retrieved remains have been transported to the Bharatpur Hospital mortuary for identification and processing. Due to limited capacity at the hospital, nine bodies discovered in Tanahun district were sent directly to authorities there.

The search operation is being jointly conducted by all three security agencies deployed in Chitwan district, indicating a coordinated response to the disaster.

Limited Mortuary Space

The sheer number of casualties has presented logistical challenges for local authorities. Superintendent of Police Rameshwor Paudel, Chief of the District Police Office Chitwan, stated that due to insufficient space at Bharatpur Hospital, any further recovered bodies will be temporarily stored at the Office of the Industrial Business Development Corporation in Bharatpur.

Search operations are ongoing as authorities continue to look for missing individuals and manage the recovery of victims from the recent flooding.
