Kathmandu— King Harald V of Norway, 89, is in an “extremely serious” condition while being treated for haemolytic anaemia at Oslo University Hospital, the palace announced Thursday. The monarch has been hospitalised since August 17 due to complications from cortisone treatment and fluid retention, prompting the cancellation of all royal engagements by Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon, who is currently serving as regent. Members of the royal family are reportedly at his bedside.

Deteriorating Health

The palace statement released on Thursday indicated a significant worsening in King Harald’s condition, describing it as “extremely serious” without providing further details. He has been receiving treatment for haemolytic anaemia, a condition characterized by the rapid destruction of red blood cells which causes fatigue and shortness of breath. The king was initially admitted to hospital last month due to fluid retention resulting from his cortisone treatment.

Royal Duties Suspended

In response to the King’s deteriorating health, Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon have cancelled all scheduled royal engagements. Crown Prince Haakon is currently acting as regent in his father's absence, assuming royal duties during this period of illness. Norwegian media reports that members of the royal family, including the queen and the crown prince with his wife Mette-Marit, were observed arriving at the hospital.

Years of Health Challenges

King Harald ascended to the Norwegian throne in 1991 and has faced several health challenges in recent years. He previously underwent a procedure to have a pacemaker fitted and has adjusted his official schedule accordingly. Despite these difficulties, he has consistently stated his intention to remain on the throne for life, referencing the lifelong oath he took before the Norwegian parliament.

The palace has not provided an updated prognosis at this time, but continues to monitor the King’s condition closely.
