Kathmandu— China has expressed its willingness to collaborate with economies within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group to enhance the resilience, efficiency, and quality of food systems across the region. Liu Huanxin, head of China’s National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration, announced this commitment during the 11th APEC Ministerial Meeting on Food Security held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, on Tuesday. The move aims to bolster food security through strengthened policy discussions, expanded exchanges, and deepened practical cooperation among APEC members.

APEC Principles for Food Security

The APEC Ministerial Meeting adopted a set of guiding principles intended to shape future food security collaboration within the Asia-Pacific region. These principles prioritize five key areas: data-driven decision making, technological innovation throughout the entire food system, broad participation and inclusive sharing of resources, multi-stakeholder and public-private partnerships, and a holistic approach to transformative development.

The meeting emphasized the importance of leveraging both innovation and digital technologies to improve food systems’ capacity to foresee risks, endure disruptions, and adapt to evolving circumstances while simultaneously boosting overall efficiency.

China's Role in Regional Cooperation

Liu Huanxin stated that China will actively strengthen policy dialogue with APEC economies, expand opportunities for exchange, and deepen practical cooperation specifically focused on food security. This commitment positions China as a key player in addressing regional challenges related to food supply and stability.

The 11th APEC Ministerial Meeting on Food Security concluded with the adoption of these principles, setting the stage for continued collaboration among APEC economies to build more robust and sustainable food systems.
