Kathmandu— From August 30th to September 3rd, Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2026 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, followed by state visits to both Kyrgyzstan and Egypt. The trip aims to bolster regional collaboration amidst a changing international landscape, focusing on practical cooperation, global governance reform, and the building of a community with a shared future for humanity. Xi’s attendance at the SCO summit and subsequent bilateral meetings are expected to energize economic partnerships and strengthen political ties across Central Asia and the Middle East.
Expanding SCO Influence
Guided by the “Shanghai Spirit” – principles of mutual trust, benefit, equality, and respect for diverse civilizations – the SCO has grown from its original six members to a 27-nation organization. This expansion demonstrates the grouping’s increasing appeal as a model for new international relations. Xi Jinping has consistently championed these values since attending his first SCO summit in 2013, repeatedly calling for adherence to the “Shanghai Spirit” and the creation of a closer SCO community with shared goals. At the 2024 Astana summit, he advocated for a common home built on solidarity, peace, prosperity, and fairness.
Deepening China-Kyrgyzstan Partnership
China and Kyrgyzstan share a long history of diplomatic relations, established in 1956, characterized by mutual support. In recent years, the relationship has been elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership, with both nations working towards building a community with a shared future focused on good-neighborliness and prosperity. A key project symbolizing this cooperation is the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, currently under construction, which aims to enhance regional connectivity and facilitate economic exchange. Two-way trade between China and Kyrgyzstan reached $27.2 billion in 2025, a significant increase of 19.8 percent year on year.
A Model Egypt-China Friendship
Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1956, China and Egypt have cultivated a strong relationship built on mutual benefit and solidarity. Xi Jinping has described the partnership as a model for cooperation between developing countries and a benchmark for collaboration between China and Arab states. The two nations elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2014, and in 2024, Egypt became the first Arab country to formally include the goal of building a community with a shared future into a bilateral joint statement. A prominent example of this cooperation is the China-Egypt Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone, which has attracted over $4.7 billion in investment and created thousands of jobs.
Boosting Regional Connectivity
China’s commitment to regional connectivity extends beyond infrastructure projects like railways and highways. The Irkeshtam Port on the China-Kyrgyzstan border now operates 24/7, streamlining cross-border trade for businesses in both countries. This facilitates not only bilateral commerce but also serves as a gateway for Chinese exports to markets across Central Asia and Europe. Furthermore, initiatives such as the Luban Workshop in Bishkek are focused on skills development, integrating Chinese educational standards into Kyrgyzstan’s national system.
The upcoming trip is expected to further solidify China's partnerships with both Kyrgyzstan and Egypt, contributing to regional stability and economic growth while promoting a vision of shared global governance.
