Kathmandu— Following increased water flow in the Bhotekoshi River near Rasuwa on Friday, Nepal requested information from Chinese authorities regarding potential risks of a lake rupture; officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs report that China has confirmed the lake formed by an avalanche remains stable, though its size is increasing and water is continuously overflowing.

Avalanche Causes Increased Water Flow

The recent increase in water flow along the Bhotekoshi River is attributed to an avalanche in the upper regions, according to information provided by the Chinese side. While this has led to increased drainage and a growing lake behind the blockage, officials have stated that the situation does not currently pose an immediate threat of major flooding.

Monitoring Continues

Chinese authorities are continuously monitoring the evolving conditions of the lake and surrounding area. They report no signs of a significant rupture or explosion despite the ongoing overflow of water from the expanding lake. This assessment was shared with Nepal following inquiries made after Friday’s observed increase in river flow.

Flood Alerts Issued

Despite assurances regarding the stability of the lake, Nepal’s Flood Forecasting Division has reported increased flood flow reaching Syafrubesi. As a precaution, the division is urging residents along the Trishuli River up to Muglin to remain vigilant and seek safe locations until further notice. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority also confirmed an increase in water and mud flow in affected areas.

Authorities on both sides continue to monitor the situation closely, with Nepal remaining prepared for potential flooding despite current assessments indicating no immediate major risk.
