Kathmandu— More than Rs 2.295 billion has been contributed to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund (PMDRF) as of Friday evening, following a government declaration of disaster zones after severe flooding impacted areas along the Nepal-China border on Wednesday morning, causing significant loss of life and property. The Ministry of Finance is coordinating collection efforts, with contributions received from both individuals and organizations, totaling Rs 1.91 billion in the first 36 hours and an additional Rs. 385.5 million on Friday alone. Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle has been personally accepting large institutional donations while individual donors can contribute directly at the ministry.

Surge in Donations from Private Sector

Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd. made the largest single contribution disclosed to date, donating Rs. 150 million and presenting a cheque to Finance Minister Wagle; company representatives Gaurav Tayal, Dipra Laheri, Ravi KC, and Prem Aryal were present for the handover. Raji Rana, an 87-year-old businesswoman, provided Rs. 10.9 million, marking the largest individual donation to the fund, with additional support from her staff and plans for further in-kind contributions valued at Rs. 2.5 million. Former Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) president RK Sharma contributed Rs. 2.5 million, stating that his contribution was “less about the amount and more a small expression of the emotional bond and responsibility felt by Nepalis towards their country during times of crisis.” Padma Jyoti Group also donated Rs. 10 million to the relief effort.

International Aid Pledges Support

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a US$5 million (Rs. 750 million) emergency grant on Friday to support urgent rescue and relief operations in the affected areas, funded through its Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund. ADB President Masato Kanda stated that this grant “is a promise kept” and will provide essential supplies such as food, water, shelter, medicine, and logistical support. The United States Embassy in Kathmandu also announced it is delivering requested emergency supplies, with the first shipment already en route to flood-affected areas through Catholic Relief Services and Caritas Nepal.

Medical Supplies Mobilized

Arya Pharma has committed Rs. 8.25 million worth of medicines for health posts and workers in disaster-stricken regions, aiming to support rescue efforts, relief operations, and healthcare treatment for affected citizens. The company stated its willingness to provide additional medical equipment and supplies if further assistance is needed.

The PMDRF balance now stands at Rs 4.09 billion, up from Rs. 2.17 billion prior to the disaster, as donations continue to be received and coordinated by the Ministry of Finance.
