Kathmandu— In Chitwan, Nepal, a total of 199 dead bodies in unrecognizable condition have been managed and buried following the catastrophic flash flood that struck Rasuwa district on August 26. The burials took place at Devghat forest area in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-1, with DNA samples preserved for future identification.

Burial Process Details

The burial process adhered to the 'Directive on Management of Unidentified Bodies and Unattended Dead Bodies (first amendment), 2083'. Chief of the District Police Office Chitwan, Superintendent of Police Rameshwor Paudel, stated that out of the total 272 bodies recovered in the district, 199 were managed for burial while 12 others have been identified. The remaining bodies include various body parts.

Identification and Future Exhumation

The government has preserved DNA samples from all unidentified bodies to ensure future identification. Once the heirs of the deceased are identified, the interred bodies or organs will be exhumed and handed over to their families for last rites in a respectful manner.
