US Seeks Extradition of Gaza Donor James ‘Fergie’ Chambers

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— James 'Fergie' Chambers, a wealthy American donor who has supported humanitarian projects in Gaza, is facing potential extradition from Spain to the United States over allegations that he provided financial support to Hamas. Chambers was arrested on July 10 while searching for a school for his son on Ibiza. His wife and legal team argue that this case represents political persecution.

Allegations Against Chambers

US authorities have accused Chambers of transferring $7.5 million to Tunisia, which they allege was used to support Hamas. The indictment remains sealed, so the specific allegations are not yet known. However, his legal team maintains that this money was for philanthropic activities in Tunisia and has no connection to Hamas.

Humanitarian Work and Political Views

Chambers is known for funding humanitarian projects in Gaza, including providing bread, water, and medical care. He describes himself as a Marxist-Leninist and has been outspoken about his views on Israel's actions towards Palestinians. His wife Stella Schnabel argues that the charges against him are politically motivated.

Legal Proceedings

Chambers is currently held in Madrid jail while Spanish authorities consider the US extradition request. His legal team, including human-rights lawyer Baltasar Garzon, has requested his provisional release and filed legal actions to prevent extradition. They argue that this case represents political persecution based on Chambers' ideas and humanitarian aid to Palestine.
