In the House races, Representative Stephen Lynch, 71, defeated progressive lawyer Patrick Roath in the 8th Congressional District, and Representative Richard Neal, 77, beat public school teacher Jeromie Whalen in the 1st District. All three will now advance to November's general election.

Markey Wins Progressive Argument

Despite Moulton’s campaign for a new generation of leadership, Markey ran as the more progressive candidate and received backing from figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. He also attacked Moulton over comments questioning transgender girls’ participation in girls' sports. In his concession speech, Moulton acknowledged that challenging the establishment is necessary but admitted defeat.

Progressive Challengers Make Gains But Fall Short

While younger challengers like Patrick Roath and Jeromie Whalen mounted competitive campaigns, they ultimately fell short against their veteran opponents. Roath raised significant funds and narrowed the gap in polls but could not overcome Lynch’s long-standing support.

The Massachusetts results contrast with other Democratic primaries where younger progressive candidates have defeated long-serving politicians. In this case, the strength of long-serving lawmakers prevailed regardless of whether their challengers came from the center or left.
