Digital Tech and Smart Gear Reshape Farming in Northeast China

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— In northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, digital technologies and smart machinery are transforming farming practices. For 16 consecutive years, the province has led the country in grain output, thanks largely to a highly mechanized system that now integrates artificial intelligence (AI), drones, and upgraded agricultural equipment. This technological shift is part of broader efforts to ensure national food security and rural revitalization.

Digital Technology Enhances Farming Precision

Inside Beidahuang Information Company in Harbin, a digital map covers 48 million mu (about 3.2 million hectares) of arable land, displaying real-time data on soil conditions, crop growth, and tractor movements through satellite remote sensing, Internet of Things (IoT), and AI integration. Wang Hao, deputy general manager of the company's market operation center, noted that drones and remote sensing now allow monitoring vast areas and updating crop data every five days. The company has developed over 60 digital systems for farm management, including an agricultural service app that facilitates online transactions worth over 14.74 billion U.S. dollars.

Smart Machinery Boosts Efficiency

At Heilongjiang Dewo Technology Development Co., Ltd., electric-drive precision seeders are lined up, capable of real-time monitoring and adjustment via smart terminals. Du Mujun, chief engineer at Dewo, said the system makes adjustments more convenient and reduces seed damage compared to traditional mechanical seeders. The company's equipment accounts for over 60 percent of domestic high-end electric-drive seeder sales and has begun exporting products overseas.

Government Plans for Agricultural Modernization

Heilongjiang's agricultural transformation is part of a broader national plan to modernize agriculture. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), the province accelerated the upgrading and intelligent transformation of agricultural machinery, according to Governor Liang Huiling. For the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), Heilongjiang plans to foster industrial clusters focused on agricultural robots, intelligent farming equipment, and low-altitude economy.
