Kathmandu— The death toll from the Bhotekoshi flash flood in Nepal has risen to 1,290, with 4,798 people still missing, according to Nepal Police Headquarters, as authorities continue recovery and identification efforts for victims of the disaster.

Recovery and Identification Efforts

Nepal Police Headquarters reported that 1,290 bodies have been recovered from the Bhotekoshi flash flood, with 32 of the deceased being children and 250 women. The police also noted that 427 of the recovered bodies were men, while 532 had partial organs, and two victims died in hospital treatment.

Deputy Inspector General Abi Narayan Kafle stated that authorities are actively managing the identification process, with DNA samples collected from 1,143 deceased individuals and 711 relatives of the victims to facilitate matching. Police have also buried 926 bodies safely as part of the ongoing recovery operations.

Rescue Operations Continue

Nepal Police confirmed that 8,197 people have been rescued alive from the flood, including 4,618 men and 2,472 women. The rescue efforts also accounted for 1,055 foreigners and 52 unidentified individuals who were successfully saved.

Kafle emphasized that the police are continuing to coordinate with local authorities and emergency services to ensure all affected areas are covered, with a focus on locating the remaining missing persons.

Authorities are working to finalize the identification of all victims and provide closure to families while continuing search operations for the missing.
