Kathmandu— The government of Nepal is observing a national day of mourning on Monday, September 7, to honor the victims of the Bhotekoshi River floods that struck Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and other areas on August 26. The disaster, one of the deadliest in recent history, has caused extensive loss of life and damage to infrastructure.

Disaster Scale and Impact

The Bhotekoshi River floods have left a profound impact on Nepal, with at least 1,342 people confirmed dead and around 5,000 still missing. Search and rescue operations continue, involving security personnel and international teams. Thousands of families have been displaced, and livelihoods and critical infrastructure have been severely affected. The government has mobilized various agencies, including the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force, for relief and recovery efforts.

Government Response and National Mourning

In response to the disaster, the government declared September 7 a national day of mourning, in line with traditional Hindu practices. The national flag will be flown at half-mast at government offices and Nepali diplomatic missions abroad. The day serves as a time for the nation to collectively remember the victims and express solidarity with affected families. The government has also focused on rescue operations, relief efforts, and the identification of recovered bodies.

Search and rescue operations continue, with the government prioritizing the recovery of survivors and the restoration of essential infrastructure in the affected areas.
