Michigan Joins Minnesota in Reporting Cyberattacks on Water Systems

Kathmandu— On Saturday, Michigan reported cyberattacks on nine of its water systems, joining Minnesota which had earlier disclosed similar incidents. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the attacks, but no official has identified a culprit yet. Dale George, director of communications at Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, confirmed that all affected systems continued to operate safely with local operators addressing any issues.

Investigation Underway

The FBI is leading the investigation into these cyberattacks, which come amid warnings from federal agencies about Iranian hackers targeting water and wastewater systems. The agency has not publicly named a suspect but stated that it remains vigilant against all types of cyber threats.

Minnesota IT Services reported on Thursday that there were no active requests for residents to modify their drinking water usage despite confirmed attacks on technology used by water systems to remotely monitor and control equipment.

Impact and Response

In Braham, a city of about 1,700 people located north of Minneapolis, the water plant was offline for several hours due to a cyberattack. The city advised residents to minimize water use while investigating the cause but assured them that there were no issues with water quality.

Plymouth, a larger city outside of Minneapolis with around 80,000 residents, also experienced a cyberattack on its water infrastructure communications. By Tuesday afternoon, officials announced that these systems had been restored.
