Palestinian Activist Sues Trump Administration Over Deportation Threats

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia University graduate student and green card holder, has filed multiple lawsuits against the Trump administration for alleged violations of his civil rights. Khalil was detained and threatened with deportation after protesting Israel's actions in Gaza, leading him to accuse the government of conspiring with right-wing Zionist groups like Canary Mission and Betar.

Conspiracy Lawsuit Against Government Officials

Khalil’s primary lawsuit targets several members of the Trump administration, including Stephen Miller and Marco Rubio, as well as organizations such as the Heritage Foundation. The suit alleges that these entities conspired to deprive Khalil of his civil rights under the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, which was designed to prevent local governments from collaborating with groups like the KKK to suppress newly freed African Americans' rights.

Project Esther and Private-Public Partnerships

The Heritage Foundation’s Project Esther outlines a blueprint for private-public partnerships aimed at intimidating those who speak out in support of Palestine. According to Khalil, the project was issued after October 7, 2023, when significant public support emerged for Palestinians on college campuses and in streets across America. The initiative calls for deporting international students to deter others from advocating for Palestinian rights.

Impact of Repression on Activists

Khalil describes the chilling effect that repression has had on pro-Palestine activists, noting that many face severe repercussions such as job loss and deportation threats. He emphasizes that while some view being listed by Canary Mission as a badge of honor, it can have serious consequences, including surveillance and targeting by government agencies.
