Kathmandu— Renowned Nepalese climber Nirmal Purja, known as 'Nimsdai', died alongside nine other climbers when an avalanche struck them while attempting to scale Broad Peak, the world’s 12th highest mountain. The tragedy has shocked the mountaineering community and brought condolences from around the globe.

A Final Plea

In his last social media post before embarking on the climb, Purja expressed a humble plea to Broad Peak for safe passage. He wrote, 'Broad Peak, I ask for nothing but safe passage up and back down.' Despite this request, nature proved unforgiving, sweeping ten climbers from 6,000 meters in an avalanche that lasted 800 meters.

A Life of Triumphs

Nimsdai's life was marked by both personal and professional triumphs. Born into a poor family in Myagdi district, he overcame childhood illnesses to join the British Army’s Special Boat Service (SBS), becoming the first Gurkha soldier to do so. His military service instilled discipline and bravery that fueled his mountaineering career.

In 2019, Purja announced 'Project Possible,' a challenge to climb all fourteen peaks over 8,000 meters in just six months and six days. He achieved this feat, adding another milestone with the winter ascent of K-2 in 2021.

Legacy and Impact

Purja's contributions extended beyond climbing records; he established the Nimsdai Foundation to work on education, environment, and disaster management. He also founded 'Porter House' at Lobuche in Solukhumbu to uplift porters’ economic status.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah expressed condolences, stating that Purja's story of courage and dedication would remain a source of inspiration for generations.
