Violent Crackdowns and Restrictions

The Human Rights Council of PoJK reports that at least 80 fatalities have occurred since protests began, including both civilians and police personnel. Roadblocks, mass arrests, and restrictions on internet and mobile services have been imposed to suppress dissent. More than one hundred people associated with the Joint Awami Action Committee were reportedly detained during a June crackdown, while subsequent violence has made precise documentation difficult due to authorities' efforts to hinder independent verification.

Elections Amidst Turmoil

The elections took place amid weeks of protests and allegations of manipulation. Civil society groups claim a substantially higher death toll during the June protests, including reports of security forces firing on unarmed crowds. Despite these challenges, voting began on July 27, but it was overshadowed by further violence and accusations of rigging. The blackout imposed around the region is seen as an essential part of controlling information about the crisis.

Lack of Legitimacy

Marino argues that elections conducted under such conditions cannot resolve the crisis or manufacture legitimacy. She notes, 'The ballot box does not become democratic merely because the state places it in a polling station.' When political representation is imposed and dissent criminalized, elections serve as another instrument of control rather than genuine democracy.

The Joint Awami Action Committee has called for international bodies to investigate the situation independently. The deteriorating humanitarian crisis demands urgent attention from organizations like the International Committee of the Red Cross.
