Kathmandu— Nepal is bracing for heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next three days, with the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology advising citizens to take precautions against potential risks such as flash floods. The forecast includes significant water level rises in small rivers across multiple provinces, particularly in the Kathmandu Valley.

Forecast Details

According to Bibhuti Pokharel, spokesperson for the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, heavy rainfall is expected at one or two locations in the hilly and Terai regions of Lumbini Province. Very heavy rainfall is anticipated in Karnali Province's hilly region and parts of Lumbini Province’s hilly and Terai areas.

Tonight, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for mountainous, hilly, and Terai regions in Koshi, Bagamati, and Gandaki provinces, as well as the hilly and Terai areas of Lumbini Province. The Department has warned that flash floods may occur at small rivers in these regions.

Risk Assessment

The Department has issued a warning about rising water levels in small rivers and streams flowing through Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, and Kavrepalanchok districts. These areas are at high risk of flash floods due to the expected heavy rainfall.

Additionally, moderate risks of flash floods have been identified for small rivers based in Taplejung, Jhapa, Dhankuta, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Udayapur, Dolakha, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Makawanpur, Gorkha, Lamjung, Tanahun, Kaski, Parbat, Myagdi, Syangja, Palpa, Gulmi, Chitwan, Nawalparasi (East), Nawalparasi (West) and surrounding districts.
