Priyanka Gandhi Criticizes Government Over Wrestlers’ Sexual Harassal Acquittal

Kathmandu— Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi on Monday criticized the central government over the acquittal of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar in a sexual harassment case involving women wrestlers. She accused the government of hypocrisy, saying they claim to support women’s rights while failing to act against those accused of misconduct.

Government Criticism on Women's Safety

Priyanka Gandhi highlighted the contradiction in the government's stance towards women's safety and empowerment. She pointed out that despite claims of supporting women’s rights, the acquittal of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar in a sexual harassment case involving women wrestlers reflects a lack of commitment to addressing such issues effectively.

The case against Singh stemmed from allegations made by women wrestlers during his tenure as WFI chief. The Delhi Police had filed charges against Singh for offenses including sexual harassment, assault or criminal force against women and criminal intimidation.

Parliamentary Absence of Home Minister

Senior Congress leader KC Venugopal accused the central government of lacking courage to address opposition-led demands inside Parliament. He questioned why the Home Minister was absent from parliamentary proceedings, noting a stark departure from his usual active presence during past sessions.

Venugopal pointed out that in previous parliamentary sessions, the Home Minister had been very active, but this session he has not attended either Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha.
