Kathmandu— Michigan health officials announced on Monday that two people have died from an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, marking the first U.S. deaths linked to this microscopic parasite known for causing severe diarrhea and dehydration. Both victims had underlying health conditions which may have exacerbated their illness. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has not provided further details about the fatalities.

Understanding Cyclospora

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection characterized by watery diarrhea with frequent explosive bowel movements. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that while the illness is rarely fatal, it can be debilitating. Outbreaks typically peak in late spring and summer due to the heat-loving nature of the parasite.

The Current Outbreak

According to the CDC, there are over 18,000 confirmed or suspected cases nationwide in the current outbreak, though state reports suggest this number may be higher. The agency has identified lettuce from Mexico served at Taco Bell locations across nine states as a primary source of infection. As of late July, more than 1,900 cases were linked to this lettuce, with nearly 100 hospitalizations reported.
