Kathmandu— Following the electoral success of New York City’s Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA) this past June, the Democratic establishment has criticized DSA for allegedly exploiting party resources. However, critics overlook that NYC-DSA campaigns rely on robust volunteer networks and community engagement, while traditional Democratic campaigns often struggle with disengaged volunteers and over-reliance on expensive digital advertising.

Criticism from the Establishment

Former DNC chair Jaime Harrison criticized DSA for using Democratic Party resources to run their campaigns. He urged those who do not support the party's values to focus on building their own organizations instead of relying on existing infrastructure. However, this critique fails to acknowledge that NYC-DSA’s success is built on grassroots organizing and community engagement rather than traditional campaign methods.

Grassroots Organizing vs. Traditional Campaigns

NYC-DSA campaigns emphasize volunteer-driven efforts such as door-knocking, phone banking, and community meetings to engage voters directly. In contrast, mainstream Democratic campaigns often rely heavily on digital advertising and professional consultants, which can alienate working-class communities who lack the resources to participate in these expensive operations.

Tascha van Auken, an architect of NYC-DSA’s electoral program, noted that traditional campaigns view voter contact as a sideshow rather than a core function. This approach benefits political consultants but leaves many voters feeling disconnected from their representatives.

Building Democratic Coalitions

NYC-DSA has built alliances with community organizations like Desis Rising Up and Moving and CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities, fostering mutual trust and engagement. These partnerships are essential for creating a politically engaged populace that supports the party’s goals.

During campaigns, NYC-DSA encourages volunteers to become experts in electoral regulations and procedures, empowering them to take an active role in shaping political direction.

NYC-DSA's approach to grassroots organizing not only secures electoral victories but also lays the groundwork for a more democratic and equitable society. The party’s current disconnection from its voter base underscores the need for a shift towards more inclusive, community-driven campaigns.
