Kathmandu— Vice President CP Radhakrishnan launched the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign in Sri Vijaya Puram, Andaman and Nicobar, on Sunday to mark the upcoming Independence Day celebrations. During the event, the Vice President hoisted the national flag at Flag Point, a site of significant historical importance, while paying tribute to the freedom fighters who fought for Indian independence.

Commemorating Historical Milestones

The campaign launch coincided with August Kranti Diwas, a day marking the anniversary of the Quit India Movement of 1942. Radhakrishnan noted the significance of the timing, observing that the movement began when Mahatma Gandhi called for an immediate end to British rule with the directive to "Do or die."

Radhakrishnan emphasized that the islands hold deep historical weight beyond their natural beauty. He stated that the patriotism ignited by figures such as Savarkar and Netaji Subhash Bose remains a guiding light for Indian citizens and will continue to inspire generations to come.

Tributes to Freedom Fighters

While visiting the islands, the Vice President paid homage to the warriors who endured suffering in the Cellular Jail. He described the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as sacred land where countless patriots made sacrifices to ensure a free and independent Bharat.

"The sufferings of the great warriors in the Cellular Jail cannot be forgotten by anyone aspiring for freedom," Radhakrishnan said. He further noted that the courage and unwavering commitment of these individuals serve as a lasting inspiration for the nation.

Historical Significance of Flag Point

The flag-hoisting ceremony took place at Flag Point in Sri Vijaya Puram, a location of immense national importance. It was at this very site that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose hoisted the tricolour on December 30, 1943, proclaiming the Andaman and Nicobar Islands free from British rule.

In a statement shared via social media, Radhakrishnan reiterated the historical weight of the site, linking the current campaign to the legacy of those who participated in the struggle for independence.

The Vice President's visit included a trip to the Cellular Jail on Saturday to pay homage to VD Savarkar.
