Tamil Nadu Assembly Set to Formalize Mandatory State Song Performance

Kathmandu— The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly is preparing to pass a resolution mandating the performance of the state song, 'Tamil Thai Vazhthu,' before all programs held by educational institutions, government offices, and public sector undertakings in the state. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay will introduce the measure, which seeks to solidify the song’s place as an expression of respect for Tamil language and culture, following a review from India's Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The resolution emphasizes the constitutional rights guaranteeing linguistic and cultural preservation within Tamil Nadu.

Historical Context of the State Song

‘Tamil Thai Vazhthu,’ originating from Manonmaniam Sundaranar’s 1891 play ‘Manonmaniam,’ was first adopted for use at government functions through a 1970 order. This practice continued until December 2021, when the song received official status as the State Song of Tamil Nadu and its mandatory performance before programs across various institutions was formally ordered. The resolution highlights that Tamil is recognized as one of the world’s oldest classical languages and represents a significant cultural heritage.

Response to Central Government Inquiry

The move comes in response to observations raised by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on July 9 regarding the singing of the State Song. While details of those observations were not provided, the Tamil Nadu Assembly’s resolution is explicitly framed as a reaffirmation of the song's importance and a defense of linguistic and cultural rights guaranteed under the Indian Constitution. The state government views the mandatory performance as crucial for preserving Tamil Nadu’s unique cultural identity.

The resolution is expected to pass unanimously, reinforcing the significance of ‘Tamil Thai Vazhthu’ within the state’s official functions and cultural landscape.
