Iran to Release Footage of New Supreme Leader Amid Health Concerns

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Following the death of Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei in February and subsequent US-Israeli strikes on Tehran, Iranian officials have announced plans to release footage of his successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, in an effort to dispel rumors surrounding his health and public absence. The new supreme leader has not been seen publicly since March, fueling speculation about potential injuries or even death resulting from the same attacks that killed his father. Despite these concerns, Iranian authorities maintain that Khamenei remains actively involved in political and military affairs.

Succession and Initial Rumors

Mojtaba Khamenei assumed the position of supreme leader after his father’s death on February 28th, coinciding with the initial phase of US-Israeli strikes targeting Tehran. His subsequent lack of public appearances quickly sparked speculation regarding his condition, with some suggesting he may have been injured or incapacitated during the same attacks that claimed his father's life. These rumors prompted Iranian officials to address concerns and promise evidence of Khamenei’s continued activity.

Official Response and Planned Footage Release

Qasem Qoraishi, deputy head of the Basij paramilitary organization, stated that footage depicting Mojtaba Khamenei among the public, in meetings with military commanders, and within neighborhoods will be released to refute claims about his health. According to comments carried by the Mehr news agency, Qoraishi believes this evidence will “disgrace the enemies and ill-wishers of the Iranian nation.” He also urged vigilance against attempts to create division within Iran’s revolutionary forces.

Recent Video Release and External Scrutiny

Iranian media recently released a 12-second video showing Khamenei seated with officials, though some external sources have questioned its recency, suggesting it may have been recorded prior to the ongoing conflict. The release of this short clip appears to be an initial attempt to demonstrate Khamenei’s continued participation in governance.

Security Concerns and US Posturing

The limited public appearances of Mojtaba Khamenei may also stem from security concerns, given that several Iranian political and military leaders – including Ali Larijani – have been targeted and killed during the conflict. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Iran’s leadership and indicated a willingness to target additional officials if Tehran does not meet his demands.

Iranian authorities continue to emphasize Mojtaba Khamenei's active role in decision-making while preparing for the release of further footage intended to address public concerns about his health and quell ongoing speculation.
