Authorities have noted a trend of smugglers packing more individuals into each vessel, raising serious concerns about safety at sea. Earlier this month, a dinghy carrying 173 people capsized in the Channel after its engine caught fire, highlighting the perilous conditions faced by those making the crossing.

The Home Office has responded to the record arrival by reiterating its condemnation of the criminal gangs facilitating these crossings. A spokesperson stated that this latest incident “demonstrates the reckless and dangerous tactics employed… who continue to put lives at risk by cramming ever greater numbers of people onto unseaworthy vessels.” The government also highlighted progress made in reducing overall crossing numbers, reporting a 43 percent decline compared to the same period last year. As part of these efforts, a payment-by-results deal with France has been signed to increase patrols on French beaches by 40 percent.

Provisional figures indicate that 14,819 people have successfully crossed the English Channel from France so far this year. Despite the recent surge in numbers on a single vessel, the government claims July has seen the lowest number of crossings since 2020.
