Kathmandu— Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) MLA Jairam Kumar Mahato has strongly condemned the actions of Jharkhand Police during a student protest in Ranchi on Monday, alleging that officers used excessive force against demonstrators demanding reforms to state-level examinations. The protest, organized by aspirants of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), involved a march towards the Vidhan Sabha (state legislature). Mahato claims police initiated a lathicharge under the cover of darkness after initially assuring protesters they would engage in dialogue, an action he believes has damaged the force’s reputation.

Protest and Initial Response

The JPSC and JSSC aspirants were protesting alleged irregularities in the JPSC and JSSC-Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examinations. Their demands included cancellation of the JSSC-CGL exam, a CBI investigation into the alleged irregularities, and broader reforms to the state’s recruitment process. Protesters have stated that their concerns haven't been adequately addressed by the government.

Allegations of Excessive Force

Mahato described the police response as a “cowardly act” that had “deeply tarnished” the reputation of the Jharkhand Police. He alleged that officers turned off lights before initiating a lathicharge on students who were seated and awaiting discussion, rather than engaging in dialogue as promised. Mahato further claimed that female protesters were subjected to physical assault by male police officers, with no female personnel present to manage the situation.

Government Response

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren stated the government respects students’ right to protest and assured their demands would be addressed through dialogue. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Soren thanked administrative and police officials for handling the situation with “restraint, sensitivity, and a deep sense of responsibility.” He also urged students not to be swayed by political narratives and emphasized resolving the issue through discussion and mutual trust.

Mahato indicated that a decision regarding future action would be made soon, reaffirming support for the protesting students and promising continued solidarity.
