Kathmandu— National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MPs are scheduled to march towards Parliament on Tuesday in response to a continued impasse with opposition parties during the ongoing Monsoon Session. The protest centers around disagreement over a discussion regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement concerning police actions taken against student protestors at Jantar Mantar, with the NDA claiming the opposition is deliberately avoiding debate despite the government's willingness to address the issue. The standoff has repeatedly disrupted parliamentary proceedings as the opposition seeks answers from the government and specifically from Shah about the recent events.

Parliamentary Standoff Intensifies

The current confrontation stems from student protests and subsequent police intervention, leading to repeated disruptions in Parliament. Opposition members have been demanding a comprehensive response from the government regarding the actions taken against protestors, with Rahul Gandhi specifically requesting a statement from Amit Shah. The government has since offered a debate on the matter, with Shah prepared to participate, but these efforts have so far failed to break the deadlock.

Opposition Rejects Government Offer

LoP in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, rejected attempts by the Government to buy peace and ensure conduct of the house. Gandhi stated that the opposition is not interested in hearing Shah’s “opinion,” but rather seeks a direct answer regarding who authorized the police crackdown. "We just want to know who ordered the firing, and if he did not order it, then who in MHA ordered it?" Gandhi questioned, implying either culpability or incompetence within the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Additional Protests Draw Scrutiny

In addition to the student protest issue, NDA MPs are also expected to criticize the opposition regarding recent actions taken by Jharkhand police against protesting JPSC and JSSC aspirants. On Monday, Jharkhand Police used lathis and water cannons to disperse a crowd during a march in Ranchi, related to alleged irregularities in state-level examinations. The protestors are demanding cancellation of an exam, a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities, and broader reforms to the recruitment process.

The NDA MPs’ planned march aims to pressure opposition parties to allow parliamentary debate on these issues, but it remains unclear whether this will resolve the ongoing standoff and restore normal proceedings.
