Just eight vessels crossed the strait on Tuesday, down from an average of 130 to 140 prior to the conflict, according to Reuters data. The decline comes as peace talks between the US and Iran have stalled, replaced by bilateral discussions between Iran and Oman regarding the waterway’s future management.

Declining Transit Volume

The volume of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz has decreased sharply since fighting began on February 28. Trade analytics platform Kpler data shows that while vessels are still able to transit, they face obstacles and heightened threats. Tuesday’s count of eight ships represents a substantial decrease from both pre-war levels and the recent ten-day average of approximately twelve ships.

Trump's Assertions and Blockade Claims

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed the U.S. has “total control” over the Strait of Hormuz, adding, “I THINK WE WILL KEEP IT!” He also stated that the ongoing US blockade of Iranian ports is being referred to as “A WALL OF STEEL,” and asserted Iran is unable to counteract it. Trump concluded his message with the phrase, “Praise be to Allah!”

Stalled Peace Talks and Iranian Demands

While a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the conflict was signed in June, it dissolved in mid-July, leading to renewed attacks by both sides. Iran has stated that it will not allow full traffic through the strait until the US naval blockade is lifted, sanctions are removed, and its assets are unfrozen. Wider peace talks with the US have been paused as Iran pursues bilateral discussions with Oman.

Escalating Regional Conflict

The conflict has expanded beyond direct US-Iran clashes, with sporadic incidents continuing in recent days. A US Navy military helicopter struck a Panama-flagged cargo vessel on Tuesday. Additionally, Yemen-based Houthis have opened a new front in the war, attacking vessels in the Bab al-Mandab Strait; six people were killed in a Houthi attack on an Egyptian-owned ship on Tuesday.

The situation remains volatile as Iran continues to negotiate with Oman and the US maintains its naval presence. Further developments are expected pending progress in diplomatic efforts or escalation of military activity.
