Nepali Congress President Warns Against ‘Privatizing’ Legacy of Party Founders

Kathmandu— Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Kumar Thapa cautioned against limiting the legacies of foundational figures such as BP Koirala and Ganeshman Singh to their families, asserting that their political achievements are part of the country’s wider democratic history. He made the remarks Sunday while addressing a book launch event in Kathmandu for NC leader Dharma Gautam’s 'BP ra Bidrohaka Ti Din' (BP and Those Days of Revolt), which examines the life and philosophy of BP Koirala, Nepal’s first democratically elected Prime Minister. Thapa stressed the importance of verified historical records over personal recollections when documenting political events, and highlighted the continuing relevance of Koirala’s policy of national reconciliation.

Historical Documentation Emphasized

Thapa observed that BP Koirala’s 'Melmilap ko Niti' (policy of national reconciliation) remains a topic of public discussion. He argued for relying on credible sources – books, documents, and historical records – when reconstructing past events, noting that claims about private conversations lack verification without such support. Thapa specifically praised the publication of Gautam’s book as contributing to this authenticity, emphasizing the value of works by individuals with direct historical background.

Ideological Comparisons Explored

Dharma Gautam explained his motivation for writing the book was to present a balanced view of past leaders, acknowledging both their strengths and weaknesses. The book delves into BP Koirala’s political philosophy, including his belief that combining democracy with communism leads to socialism, while removing democracy results in pure communism. It also draws comparisons between Koirala's ideas and Madan Bhandari’s concept of 'People’s Multiparty Democracy', offering a broader analysis of Nepali political thought.

Party Unity and Future Plans

Thapa affirmed that the NC remains a national force, stating its identity cannot be taken away. He addressed recent gatherings within the party's establishment faction, requesting journalists await an official press conference scheduled for Monday at the party’s central office to receive further details. Gautam also announced plans to donate proceeds from book sales to improve facilities at a community health post and basic school in his home district of Ilam, with support from his family.

Senior journalist Harihar Birahi echoed calls for continued documentation of Nepal's political history by leaders like Gautam, emphasizing the benefit such efforts would provide to future generations.
