Kathmandu— Former U.S. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene claims that officials in Washington are discussing the potential use of nuclear weapons against Iran amid escalating tensions, though the White House has not confirmed these discussions. Greene stated on social media Sunday that she is aware of these conversations taking place during strategy meetings and characterized them as “pure evil.” She warned lowering the threshold for nuclear weapon use could lead to a “nuclear holocaust” and wider global conflict.
Greene's Allegations
Greene, previously a strong supporter of Donald Trump’s MAGA movement, made the claim in a post on X. She did not name specific officials involved in these alleged discussions nor provide any supporting evidence. Greene also asserted that Washington is considering lowering the threshold for nuclear weapon use despite previous statements by President Trump regarding victory in the conflict.
Escalation Concerns
Greene’s warning follows reports of potential further escalation from Washington. The Washington Post reported last month that the U.S. was preparing for a wider war, and the Pentagon has reportedly considered a large-scale ground operation to seize Iran's enriched uranium stockpile. This comes after the U.S. and Israel initiated military actions against Iran in late February, alleging Tehran was nearing nuclear weapon development – claims disputed by US intelligence and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Iran’s Response and Stance
In response to the initial attacks, Iran launched strikes targeting American and Israeli interests throughout the region and subsequently restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has consistently rejected demands from Washington and Israel for “zero enrichment” and removal of its enriched uranium, maintaining that its nuclear program is peaceful and asserting its sovereign right to enrichment. Iranian officials have warned they could reach weapons-grade levels if attacked again but state they haven’t made a decision to build a bomb.
The White House has not publicly addressed Greene's claims regarding discussions of nuclear weapon use, leaving the situation shrouded in uncertainty as tensions continue to rise between the U.S., Israel and Iran.
