Nepali Lawmakers Urge Focus on Electric Cooking as Gas Imports Face Scrutiny

Kathmandu— During a House of Representatives meeting today, Nepali lawmakers advised the government to promote electric cooking stoves as a viable alternative to LP gas. Concerns were raised regarding both environmental pollution stemming from reliance on imported cooking gas and disruptions to transportation infrastructure caused by recent monsoon-related disasters, impacting access to essential goods and services across several districts.

Calls for Alternative Fuel Sources

Shreeram Neupane emphasized the need to promote alternative fuels in order to minimize environmental pollution and reduce Nepal’s dependence on imported cooking gas. The lawmakers’ discussion highlighted a growing interest in sustainable energy solutions within the country.

Purna Prasad Limbu of Sankhuwasabha informed the House that continuous rainfall had disrupted power supply to Bhokhola rural municipality, forcing residents to rely on alternative energy sources.

Infrastructure Disruptions and Relief Efforts

Dhan Bahadur Budha reported that Dolpa district is experiencing difficulties in transporting food supplies and construction materials due to landslides blocking roadways. He called for immediate rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts for affected citizens.

Prem Bahadur Bayak expressed concern over the rising number of casualties from road accidents, urging the implementation of a more effective road safety policy.

Wildlife Concerns and Government Accountability

Prakash Pathak requested that the government take effective measures to manage wild elephants in Jhapa district, where communities are suffering from animal intrusions into settlements. He stressed the importance of “result-oriented deliveries” from the government.

The lawmakers also noted ongoing disruptions caused by monsoon rains and their impact on essential services like electricity supply.

Opposition Ends Protest

Following a ruling issued Monday by Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal directing the Prime Minister to address lawmakers’ concerns, opposition members ended their protest in the House today. The move signals a potential easing of political tensions within Parliament.

The government has yet to respond to the specific proposals made by the lawmakers regarding electric cooking stoves and infrastructure improvements, but is expected to consider these issues as it develops future policy.
