Kathmandu— Wassim al-Assad, a cousin of ousted Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad, has been sentenced to death by a court in Damascus after being found guilty of crimes committed during Syria’s nearly 14-year war. The Fourth Criminal Court issued the ruling on Tuesday, convicting him of charges including premeditated murder and torture. This sentencing follows last week’s similar verdicts against Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher al-Assad, and another cousin, Atef Najib, who were also sentenced to death for crimes encompassing murder, torture, and crimes against humanity.

Recent Wave of Death Sentences

The ruling against Wassim al-Assad is part of a series of recent verdicts handed down by the Damascus court targeting former figures associated with the Assad regime. Last week, Bashar al-Assad, Maher al-Assad, and Atef Najib received death sentences for similar charges related to crimes committed during the ongoing Syrian conflict.
