Kathmandu— Congressional Democrats are preparing a war powers resolution to prohibit military action against Oman after President Donald Trump threatened to bomb the country for engaging in negotiations with Iran. The threats came as discussions aimed at reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which included potential transit fees paid to Iran, stalled and a 60-day agreement between the US and Iran expired on Monday. Senator Tim Kaine announced plans to introduce the resolution when the Senate returns from recess next month, citing Trump’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric and unilateral approach to foreign policy.
Escalating Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz
President Trump publicly warned that he would “bomb the sh*t out of” Oman if it interfered with his efforts to control the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global oil shipments. This followed reports that Oman and Iran were nearing an agreement to reopen the strait, potentially allowing shipping companies to pay transit fees directly to Iran – a development seen as detrimental to US strategic interests. A memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran had established a 60-day window for de-escalation and reopening the Strait, but it expired without a resolution.
Congressional Response and War Powers Debate
Senator Tim Kaine condemned Trump’s statements as “deranged” and announced his intention to introduce a war powers resolution specifically prohibiting military action against Oman. He argued that any such actions would be illegal without congressional approval, highlighting the financial and human costs of unilateral military interventions. While Democrats have previously introduced over a dozen similar resolutions regarding Iran since February, they have largely been symbolic due to Republican control of the Senate.
Iranian Response and Potential Escalation
An Iranian official stated that Tehran is prepared to escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider region if diplomatic efforts fail. The official also warned of “timely and precise strikes” against a US naval blockade on Iranian ports, should it be implemented. In response to Trump’s suggestion of claiming the Strait of Hormuz as US territory – accompanied by a map labeling it as such – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi asserted that either Trump would correct his “delusion,” or Iran would address it directly.
With talks between the US and Iran at an impasse, the situation remains volatile and the potential for further escalation in the Strait of Hormuz is high. The fate of Senator Kaine’s resolution will depend on securing bipartisan support in the Senate.
