Kathmandu— Bolivian authorities have arrested Fernando Cerimedo, a political consultant who has advised prominent right-wing leaders across Latin America, following an attack on activist Nadia Beller. The arrest occurred Tuesday as Cerimedo attempted to leave the country via airport in Bolivia; he is suspected of involvement in a plot to murder Beller, who was recently attacked in Santa Cruz and believes she was targeted for her opposition to government policies and witnessing corruption. Cerimedo has worked on political campaigns for Argentinian President Javier Milei, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, and Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz.
The Attack and the Victim
Nadia Beller, a lawyer and political activist who was four weeks pregnant at the time of the incident, was attacked in Santa Cruz. Security footage shows two men approaching her while she stood outside a hotel, shooting her at close range before stealing some belongings and fleeing the scene. Beller alleges that the attack stemmed from her opposition to Decree 5503 – a set of economic reforms being prepared by Cerimedo and the Bolivian government – and her knowledge of high-level corruption.
Economic Reforms at Issue
Decree 5503 proposes significant economic changes, including the elimination of state fuel subsidies. These reforms represent a departure from policies implemented under Bolivia’s previous socialist administration. Beller has publicly opposed the decree, viewing it as unconstitutional and harmful to Bolivian citizens.
Personal Connection Revealed
Beller revealed in a video statement from her hospital bed that she had a romantic relationship with Cerimedo. She stated her decision to speak out was driven by a fear for her life, saying “until I speak directly to the Bolivian people, they are going to finish what they attempted to do. They are going to end up taking my life.” Beller highlighted Cerimedo’s considerable political influence.
Government Response
Bolivian Vice President Edmand Lara condemned the attack during a news conference, stating it “threatens life, democracy, and freedom of expression”. He called for an impartial investigation into the incident, emphasizing that it should be conducted “without any kind of favoritism”.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the ongoing investigation or potential charges against Cerimedo. The case is expected to draw significant attention given the high-profile individuals involved and the political implications surrounding Decree 5503.
