Kathmandu— NATO stated Wednesday it is prepared to respond to potential threats stemming from possible Iranian attacks on United States military installations within Europe, as Bulgaria heightened security at the Bezmer Air Base. The statement comes after a report in the Financial Times indicated Iran had contemplated targeting US locations across the continent, raising concerns particularly in southeastern European nations that host facilities supporting American operations. NATO officials highlighted their recent interception of four Iranian ballistic missiles launched towards Turkiye as evidence of the alliance’s defensive capabilities and commitment to protecting its members.
Increased Security Measures in Bulgaria
Bulgaria's parliament authorized the use of Bezmer Air Base as a refueling station for US military aircraft in July, allowing approximately 250 American service personnel to be stationed there until October. Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev informed the BTA news agency that the country had implemented “all possible measures” at the base in coordination with the Ministry of Defence, citing a threat level exceeding current security assessments. He emphasized ongoing monitoring and proactive precautionary steps.
Iranian Warnings and Regional Tensions
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reportedly warned his Bulgarian counterpart that any nation involved in military action against Iran would be held accountable for the consequences, according to Iran's Tasnim News Agency. This warning follows a pattern of Iranian statements cautioning against assistance to potential adversaries and highlighting the risk of becoming targets themselves. A British airbase in Cyprus was previously struck by a drone earlier this year amid escalating tensions.
Failed De-escalation Efforts
The United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in June with the aim of de-escalating hostilities and establishing a framework for a permanent agreement to end ongoing conflict. However, that deadline expired on Monday without a resolution, and no negotiations are currently underway. The lack of progress raises concerns about continued instability and potential escalation.
NATO continues to monitor the situation closely and maintain its defensive posture as diplomatic efforts remain stalled between the US and Iran.
