Kathmandu— Multiple individuals were injured Friday afternoon when a person armed with a sword attacked students and staff at Brinellskolan, a high school in the central Swedish municipality of Fagersta. Police responded to reports of “deadly violence” and took one suspect into custody. The school, which has approximately 450 students aged 16-20, was immediately placed on lockdown along with other schools in the surrounding area as authorities investigated the scene.

Attack Details

The Fagersta municipality confirmed that an assailant entered Brinellskolan and wounded several people before being detained by police. Authorities received an alarm early Friday afternoon, prompting a rapid response from emergency services including ambulances and a police helicopter. Police spokesman Pelle Vamstad stated that investigators are currently reviewing camera footage as part of the preliminary investigation.

Government Response

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson addressed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “A serious incident has occurred today in Fagersta at a school, right after the summer break.” He added that authorities do not yet know the motive behind the attack but are working intensively to determine the circumstances. Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer confirmed the government is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining close contact with police.

History of School Violence

This incident adds to a concerning pattern of attacks at Swedish educational institutions. In February 2025, ten people were killed in a shooting at an adult education center in Orebro, attributed to the perpetrator’s personal struggles. Prior to that, in March 2022, two teachers were fatally stabbed by a student in Malmo. A similar sword attack occurred in Trollhattan in October 2015, resulting in three deaths and motivated by racial hatred.

Police are continuing their work at the scene, urging the public to respect roadblocks and follow instructions from law enforcement officials as they gather evidence and investigate the full extent of the incident.
