China’s Early Rice Output Remains Stable Despite Weather Challenges

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— China's early rice production remained relatively stable in 2026, totaling 28.29 million tonnes according to data released Friday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The planting area increased marginally, but overall output decreased by 0.8 percent year-on-year due to adverse weather conditions affecting key growing regions. Despite these challenges, officials express confidence that a solid foundation has been laid for a strong grain harvest this year, building on record summer grain production.

Production Figures and Trends

The NBS reported that early rice output reached 28.29 million tonnes, maintaining levels above 28 million tonnes for the sixth consecutive year. The planted area saw a slight increase of 22,000 mu (approximately 1,467 hectares), reaching 71.164 million mu overall. However, despite the expanded planting area, total output experienced a minor decline of 0.8 percent compared to the previous year.

Weather Impacts on Yield

While initial weather conditions were favorable following planting, persistent heavy rainfall and typhoons later impacted production in southern China’s major rice-growing areas. This led to a decrease in average yield, which fell by 0.8 percent to 397.6 kg per mu, according to the NBS data. Wei Fenghua, an NBS official, attributed the output reduction to these late-season weather events.

Government Support and Capacity Building

China has implemented several measures to support grain production this year, including maintaining minimum purchase prices for early indica rice and providing farmland fertility protection subsidies. Wei Fenghua stated that increased support for crop rotation was also provided to stabilize farmers’ planting expectations. Furthermore, the country continues to invest in strengthening its overall grain production capacity, with over 66.7 million hectares of high-standard farmland developed nationwide. Domestically bred crop varieties now account for more than 95 percent of the total planted area.

Record Summer Grain Output

The stable early rice production is complemented by a significant increase in summer grain output, which totaled 150.75 million tonnes this year – exceeding 150 million tonnes for the first time, according to previously released NBS data. Wei Fenghua emphasized that these combined results provide a strong foundation for an overall bumper grain harvest this year.

China’s agricultural sector continues to prioritize stable grain production through supportive policies and investments in farmland development and domestic crop varieties.
