China, Indonesia Pledge Strengthened Cooperation Amid Global Uncertainty

Kathmandu— Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono convened the first Conference of China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue Mechanism in Jakarta on Friday, where they emphasized the need for strengthened all-round cooperation between their countries. The meeting occurred against a backdrop of increasing global turbulence and unilateralism, with both officials highlighting the importance of strategic communication as major developing nations. They agreed to launch a new Five-Year Action Plan and deepen collaboration across multiple sectors, including energy, technology, and maritime affairs.

Strategic Alignment and Mutual Support

Wang Yi stated that China views Indonesia as a key partner in its diplomacy, particularly within the region, and expressed readiness to enhance mutual understanding and support. Sugiono echoed this sentiment, noting that China’s development presents significant opportunities for Indonesia and neighboring countries. Both ministers affirmed their commitment to upholding strategic autonomy and firmly supporting each other's core interests.

Economic Partnership Expansion

The two sides agreed that deeper cooperation in energy and mineral resources is mutually beneficial and expressed a desire to build a comprehensive, open, and green partnership in these areas. Indonesia specifically praised the contributions of Chinese companies to local development, stating their success also benefits Indonesia, and pledged to provide a favorable business environment for them. Discussions also included expanding collaboration in artificial intelligence and poverty reduction.

Regional Security Concerns

Both China and Indonesia reaffirmed their commitment to resolving regional disputes peacefully. They agreed to fully implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and work towards finalizing a Code of Conduct for the area. Additionally, they committed to restarting cooperation in fishing and accelerating maritime collaboration.

Five-Year Plan and Future Dialogue

The ministers decided to launch the formulation of a China-Indonesia Five-year Action Plan spanning 2027-2031, outlining future areas of cooperation. They also agreed to hold the second meeting of the Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue Mechanism in China next year.

The first conference signals a continued strengthening of ties between China and Indonesia as they navigate an increasingly complex global landscape.
