Kathmandu— China’s Ministry of Water Resources initiated a Level-IV emergency response on Saturday to address potential flooding in the provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan as Typhoon Narra approaches southern China. The 19th typhoon of the year is forecast to bring heavy rainfall between August 22nd and 24th, potentially causing rivers to swell and triggering floods in vulnerable areas. Authorities are prioritizing monitoring, early warning systems, and evacuation procedures to protect residents and infrastructure.
Typhoon Narra’s Projected Path
Typhoon Narra is expected to bring heavy to torrential rainfall across southern and western Guangxi, Guangdong, and Hainan provinces. The Ministry of Water Resources forecasts that some areas will experience extremely heavy downpours during the period from August 22nd to 24th. Water levels are predicted to rise in rivers including the Zuojiang and Mingjiang, tributaries of the Yujiang River, as well as smaller and medium-sized waterways in regions already impacted by rainfall.
Emergency Response Measures
The Ministry of Water Resources has directed local water resources departments to closely monitor Narra’s development and enhance monitoring of both rainfall and river levels. Emphasis is being placed on accurate forecasting, early warning dissemination, and the proper operation of water conservancy projects. The ministry also stressed the importance of preventing mountain torrents and ensuring the safety of reservoirs during the flood season.
Safety Precautions for Residents
Authorities are urged to dynamically update catalogs of high-risk areas and evacuate residents from hazardous locations promptly. Safeguarding people’s lives and property is a key priority, with specific attention given to the safety of tourists and construction workers in affected regions. The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters and the Ministry of Emergency Management have also jointly activated a Level-IV emergency response for typhoon and flood control in southeastern Fujian Province.
China’s four-tier flood-control system designates Level I as the most severe, indicating that current conditions warrant significant but manageable preventative measures.
