Kathmandu— The government of Nepal reached an agreement with the parents of Garima Chaudhary, a three-year-old girl from Bara district, on Saturday evening, committing to pursue justice in her recent death and address the family’s demands. Home Minister Sudhan Gurung met with Manoj Kumar Chaudhary and Manmati Chaudhary at the Ministry of Home Affairs alongside several other ministers to discuss the case and formulate a response. The agreement outlines plans for legal review, the construction of a memorial, and facilitation of Garima's funeral according to family customs.

Legal Reforms Under Consideration

The government has committed to reviewing existing laws related to crimes and punishments with the intention of drafting new legislation that better reflects public expectations regarding severe offenses. A seven-member committee will be established by the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs to prepare this report, which is expected to be submitted within one week. This review comes in response to concerns raised following Garima’s death and aims to strengthen legal frameworks for handling similar cases in the future.

Memorial Planned For Victim

In addition to legal changes, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development will collaborate with local authorities to construct a memorial dedicated to Garima Chaudhary. This commitment was made in direct response to a request from her parents and is intended as a lasting tribute to the young victim. The location and design details of the memorial have not yet been announced.

Funeral Rites To Be Honored

The government has assured Garima’s parents that they will be permitted to conduct her funeral in accordance with their cultural traditions and customs. This commitment addresses a key demand from the family, allowing them to grieve and honor their daughter in a manner consistent with their beliefs.

The agreement signifies a step towards addressing the concerns of Garima's family while simultaneously pursuing legal avenues for justice in this case.
