Kathmandu— Nepal's Minister for Information and Communications, Dr. Bikram Timilsina, inspected areas in the Nuwakot district impacted by recent monsoon landslides on Sunday, directing local officials to expedite the evacuation of vulnerable populations. Representing Nuwakot constituency -1 in the House of Representatives, Dr. Timilsina visited Panchakanya, Shivapuri and Likhu rural municipalities which experienced landslides triggered by heavy rainfall between August 20-21, assessing damage and engaging with affected residents to understand their immediate needs. The visit focused on coordinating disaster response efforts and securing support for long-term resettlement plans.

Assessment of Landslide Damage

The Minister’s inspection covered several areas within Panchakanya, Shivapuri, and Likhu rural municipalities, all impacted by landslides caused by persistent rainfall. He received briefings from local officials, including Panchakanya Rural Municipality Chair Tej Bahadur Tamang, regarding the extent of the damage and its consequences for residents. The assessment aimed to provide a firsthand understanding of the situation on the ground and inform effective relief measures.

Evacuation Orders and Immediate Relief

Following his inspection, Dr. Timilsina instructed district authorities to prioritize the prompt evacuation of families living in areas deemed unsafe due to landslide risks. He acknowledged the initial disaster response efforts undertaken by local government and administration, pledging support from the federal government for resettlement initiatives. “We will provide necessary facilitation from the federal government for the resettlement of people that are at risk and need to be shifted,” he stated.

Resident Concerns and Resettlement Requests

During interactions with affected citizens in Panchakanya-4, Shivapuri-5, and Likhu-1, residents voiced concerns about the safety of their homes and requested assistance with resettlement. Eleven families from Bokedanda expressed that conditions were unsafe for return, emphasizing the need for long-term solutions. Dr. Timilsina responded by assuring them that their needs would be addressed through collaborative efforts between all levels of government following a thorough technical assessment.
