Nevada Wildfire Forces Mass Evacuations, Injures First Responders

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— A rapidly spreading wildfire northwest of Reno, Nevada, erupted Saturday and quickly forced around 42,000 residents to evacuate as it consumed over 15,000 acres. The blaze, dubbed the Hawk Fire, has also injured three civilians and three first responders, with several structures confirmed destroyed. Shifting winds have complicated firefighting efforts, causing the fire to change direction unpredictably and prompting authorities to expand evacuation zones while urging residents to leave immediately.

Rapid Spread and Evacuation Orders

The Hawk Fire’s rapid spread led to an expanded “GO NOW” evacuation zone reaching the University of Nevada, Reno. An additional 45,000 people were placed under a “GET SET” warning, advised to prepare for potential evacuation and extended absence from their homes. Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam described the situation as “extremely confusing,” noting how fluctuating winds repeatedly altered the fire’s course.

Firefighting Challenges

Erratic wind conditions presented significant challenges for firefighting crews, with reports indicating flames jumping over fire trucks and hindering access to hotspots. Footage circulating online depicts a man using heavy machinery in an attempt to create a firebreak amidst the intense blaze. The Nevada National Guard has deployed two helicopter crews and 60 troops to support containment efforts and safeguard evacuated neighborhoods.

Cause Under Investigation, State of Emergency Declared

Officials have confirmed that the Hawk Fire was caused by human activity but have not yet determined whether it was accidental or deliberate. The precise cause remains under investigation. In response to the escalating crisis, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County.

Widespread Impacts and Regional Context

The wildfire initially cut power to nearly 60,000 customers, though that number decreased to around 10,000 by Sunday. Sections of US Route 395 were also closed. The Hawk Fire is occurring amidst a period of prolonged drought and record-low snowfall in the American West, contributing to increased wildfire risk across the region. Fifteen new fires ignited across Nevada on Saturday alone, while recent wildfires near Spokane, Washington, and north of Reno have already displaced tens of thousands more residents.

Firefighting efforts are ongoing as crews battle the Hawk Fire and work to contain its spread. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide updates to affected communities.
