Both sides emphasized the need to build upon what they described as a “new positioning” for the China-U.S. relationship – one characterized by constructive strategic stability. Strengthening communication and dialogue were identified as key components in enhancing mutual political trust, signaling an effort to manage tensions and prevent further deterioration of ties. The meeting comes at a time when relations between Washington and Beijing have been strained over issues including trade, technology, and geopolitical competition.
