Kathmandu— Following an inspection of flood-damaged areas in Bidur, Nuwakot, Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah directed a swift response to the disaster on Sunday, instructing relevant ministries to prioritize rescue efforts, medical treatment for the injured, and immediate relief supplies for displaced families. The prime minister convened a high-level meeting with chief secretaries and ministry officials to coordinate the aid operation, emphasizing organized and secure temporary shelters for those impacted by the floods.
On-Site Assessment Drives Response
Prime Minister Shah returned from an on-site inspection of Bidur in Nuwakot before holding a meeting at the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. The assessment informed his instructions to accelerate rescue operations in affected areas, according to Deepa Dahal, the prime minister’s press and research expert. Secretaries from key ministries—including Defense, Home Affairs, Finance, Foreign Affairs, Energy, Health, and Civil Aviation—attended the meeting.
Focus on Shelter Standards
During the high-level meeting, Prime Minister Shah stressed the importance of well-organized and sanitary conditions within relief camps established for displaced individuals. He issued specific instructions to ensure privacy for all camp residents, with particular attention given to the safety and dignity of women, children, and elderly citizens. The prime minister emphasized providing proper respect and security to vulnerable groups.
Infrastructure Restoration Prioritized
Recognizing the broader impact of the floods, Prime Minister Shah directed relevant ministries to develop an integrated plan for restoring essential infrastructure damaged by the disaster. This includes roads, electricity grids, and communication networks, all crucial for facilitating relief efforts and long-term recovery in affected communities.
The government has initiated steps to implement the prime minister’s directives, with a focus on coordinating aid delivery and rebuilding critical infrastructure.
