Kathmandu— Residents along the banks of the Narayani River in Chitwan district are being moved to safer locations after authorities received reports of a potential lake breach further upstream in Rasuwa, impacting the Bhotekoshi River. The precautionary measure comes in the wake of a major flash flood on Wednesday that struck the Bhotekoshi, resulting in significant loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure estimated at billions of rupees.

Flash Flood Impact

A massive flash flood occurred in the Bhotekoshi River on Wednesday, causing widespread devastation. The event resulted in numerous fatalities and caused billions of rupees worth of damage to infrastructure.

Evacuation Measures

In response to information regarding a potential breach in a lake feeding the upstream Bhotekoshi River, authorities are proactively evacuating people residing near the Narayani River bank. Rameshwor Paudel, chief of the Chitwan district police office, stated that access to and activity around the riverbanks has been restricted as a safety precaution.

Public Safety Warnings

Officials are actively warning the public against visiting the riverbanks or conducting business in risky areas. Announcements are being made via loudspeaker urging people who have gathered to observe the river to return to safe locations.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and prioritize the safety of residents near the Narayani River.
